  • High school graduate with on-the-job training in a clinical laboratory.        
  • One year experience preferred.

Performs skin punctures to obtain blood specimens for laboratory testing. Responsible for prompt, accurate processing of test requisitions, accurate charging, registering and ordering tests for outpatients, informing techs of stat and other timed or urgent testing. Distributes and files test results and physician orders, telephones patients, physicians, and nursing units when required. Performs capillary glucose testing. Performs EKGs for outpatients. Maintains neat and organized collection trays, collection areas, and work areas. Persons in this position are expected to demonstrate logical/professional behaviors under demanding and stressful conditions.

Essential Job Functions:
1. Obtains specimens according to laboratory procedures. 
2. Labels specimens properly following lab procedures. Identifies each patient using
two identifiers and verifies patient bracelet information. 
3. Delivers specimens and requisitions to appropriate lab section. 
4. Performs EKGs according to procedure. 
5. Logs non-interfaced reference specimens and reports 
6. Distributes reports to appropriate department, ward, physician.
7. Files and distributes lab results in a timely manner. 
8. Gives immediate, courteous attention to all persons coming to the laboratory.
9. Is courteous and diplomatic when handling requests for information.
10. Instructs patients in special procedures.
11. Maintains neat, organized collection trays, collection areas, and work areas.
12. Performs glucometer testing according to laboratory protocol.
13. Capably handles the stress of multiple demands, time deadlines, and high pressure
situations while performing job duties.
14. Organizes workload and sets appropriate priorities.
15. Maintains patient confidentiality.
16. Maintains rigid accuracy when identifying and reporting numbers, names, and
test results.
17. Assists in laboratory inventory control necessary for continuation of workflow.
Monitors and restocks inventory daily to prevent shortages and outdates.
18. Performs any other duties deemed necessary, required, or assigned by the
Laboratory Director, Laboratory Manager, or LIS/Quality Coordinator.
